SKIN
SURGERY
Surgery of
the skin is a major area of expertise for the dermatologist. As
a matter of fact, dermatologists perform more surgery than any
other medical specialists including plastic surgeons and general
surgeons.
As a dermatologist,
Doctor DeLaus evaluates each case and selects the best treatment
for that particular case. He uses various treatment modalities
to perform surgery including excision with curetting (an instrument
removing the skin in layers), use of electrocautery (electrical
destruction), excisions with suturing, cryosurgery (using cold
surgery with liquid nitrogen to destroy tissue), and chemosurgery
(use of chemicals to destroy tissue).
Generally
non-dermatological surgeons remove lesions only one way; excision
with a scalpel and closure of the wound with sutures (stitches).
This may or may not be the best treatment depending on the lesion
being treated.
Other lesions,
including warts, nevi (moles), cysts, lipomas, scars and dermatofibromas
may also be treated with various surgical modalities. The doctor
uses various procedures to treat warts (verruca) depending on
the patient's age and the type, number and location of the warts.
